Widespread flooding in Swellendam after overnight rainfall

Widespread flooding has been reported in the Swellendam region of the Western Cape following heavy overnight rain.

A spokesperson for the local neighbourhood watch, Hans Theron says close to 80 millimetres of rain has been recorded in some places.

He says low water bridges at Buffelsjags River have been flooded and some houses have been flooded.

Disaster Management teams have been deployed to the area.

Heavy rains also wreaked havoc across the Western Cape about two weeks ago, leading to extensive damage to roads and private properties.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Cape weather service says rain has fallen in the Langkloof catchment area and this will assist in further increasing the dam levels in the Nelson Mandela Metro.

The spokesperson of the Weather Services, Garth Sampson says that the rain is expected to clear up tomorrow, but will pick up again next week.

“On the top of the Langkloof Misgund area, only one millimeter was measured last night. On the Karedouw side, 7 to 10 millimeters of rain was measured and it is still raining lightly over the entire Langkloof. This should maintain the Churchhill and Mpofu Dam. Models show five to ten millimeters of rain in Karedouw for the next 24 hours.”
