The Western Cape Premier Allan Winde has thanked the government for swiftly declaring the province a disaster area following inclement weather that caused devastating floods.

Speaking in a joint debate in Parliament on Friday, Winde said the Western Cape government was committed to building a better South Africa by supporting the Government of National Unity.

“We have had more than a week of solid rain, devastating weather, more than 200 citizens in this province displaced because of this weather incident that has now been declared a state a disaster. More than 40 000 structures damaged and destroyed many many roads. As I stand here, more than 70 roads are still under water. Mr President it’s about disasters and I must say to Mr Hlabisa, to the Deputy Minister to the way that you reacted to this disaster. There is a new feeling behind this new Government of National Unity. On Friday, we wrote to the Minister saying this needs a declaration of disaster. On Friday, we got an answer to say yes.”
