The Department of Education in the Western Cape is investigating allegations of racism against a substitute teacher at Table View High School in Cape Town.

This follows allegations made by a parent of a Grade 12 learner that the teacher had used the “k” word in the classroom.

Spokesperson for the Department Bronagh Hammond says the word was allegedly used as part of a history lesson about Black Consciousness.

Hammond says the school has submitted a report to the Department, including statements from the learners and that the teacher concerned has apologised to the learners.

“The allegations are being addressed with the seriousness it deserves. If any learner requires counselling, they can be assisted. The alleged incident is currently being investigated by our Labour Relations Directorate. They have scheduled a visit to the school and based on the findings of that investigation, a decision will be made regarding a disciplinary hearing,” adds Hammond.

Meanwhile, the Save South Africa Civic Movement has called on Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane to consider racism allegations against the Pretoria High School for Girls staff, including the principal.

It was reported that there were complaints from black learners regarding white learners.

Twelve learners have so far been suspended.

The movement’s spokesperson, Tebogo Mashilompane, says the behaviour of the accused learners is worrying.
