Political analysts suggest that the African National Congress (ANC) is growing increasingly apprehensive about the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party’s impact in the lead-up to the 2024 elections.

The MK party has gained significant momentum, especially after receiving a public endorsement from former President Jacob Zuma in December, where he declared his decision not to vote for the ANC in the upcoming election.

Political analyst Dr Ebrahim Harvey says the ANC is under threat from the emergence of the MK party. “The ANC leadership is experiencing sleepless nights over the MK party and its potential impact. The party has gained considerable attention and significance, not only in KZN. I am confident that this party will have a formidable impact in the polls, if not nationally, certainly in KZN. The ANC and the country are going through the worst crisis ever, and the ruling party needs to be held accountable for this crisis.”

Moreover, Dr Harvey suggests that the retirement of ANC MP Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma from Parliament could be due to her perception of corruption within the ANC. He speculates that she might choose to vote for a different party in the upcoming elections.

“Why do you think Dlamini-Zuma is resigning as an MP? She’s not interested. She’s been unhappy, and I can tell you now, in particular, the phala phala scandal. The ANC is falling apart, and with Zuma throwing his weight behind the MK party, Dlamini-Zuma is likely to strongly support the MK party, boosting its electoral prospects.”
