A 34-year-old man has appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court in KwaZulu-Natal in connection with a crash which claimed the lives of six family members of Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga.

Celumusa Ngwenya is facing six counts of culpable homicide.

Chikunga’s son, daughter-in-law and four grandchildren, the youngest of whom was 4-years old, died in the crash between a car and a bakkie on the N11 between Ladysmith and Newcastle in July 2022.

“Following the accident and prosecutor-guided investigations, Ngwenya appeared in court on summons. During court proceedings today he opted for Legal Aid assistance and the matter was remanded to 14 February 2024, for consultation and copies of the docket. Ngwenya will remain out on warning since he was brought to court on summons,” says KwaZulu-Natal NPA spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara.
