Th SABC’s Mpumalanga radio station, Ligwalagwala FM visited inmates at the Nelspruit Correctional Services to encourage and give hope to women behind bars, while commemorating Women’s Day.

The Siswati broadcasting station aims to give hope and motivation to women who are often sidelined and forgotten by society due to their wrongdoings.

The inmates showcased the various skills they learnt while behind bars, including baking, singing and farming. These are some of the inmates who were part of the commemoration.

“This is beautiful. I really appreciate everything you’ve done for us. It really shows that you remember us although we are inmates. It shows that as women of South Africa you value us even if we are in this place. We’ve done wrong, we committed bad in our communities, but this is beautiful.”

.”We are happy as we are today outside, with other women. We are getting some fresh air and talking to other women.”

Meanwhile, Department of Correctional Services National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale, who was also part of the event, thanked the public broadcaster for telling and showing stories that contributes to the rehabilitation of inmates.

“We encourage our offenders to listen to the radio, watch television and get inspired by the stories of success and stories of those that are law abiding so that when they are busy in the journey of rehabilitation, they can also aspire to join in the larger community outside and contribute positively to local economic development. We are actually being embraced by broadcasting authorities in this country to say let’s work together to change the lives of those that find themselves or found themselves in trouble with the law.”
