Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya has paid tribute to outgoing Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, describing him as a man of integrity, honour, and a supporter of women in the judiciary.

Zondo delivered his last judgment at the Constitutional Court where a special ceremonial sitting was held in his honour.

Justices of the Constitutional Court, Judicial Officers as well as representatives of the Executive, Parliament and the legal profession, applaud Zondo for transforming the judiciary during his term of office.

Today’s sitting and judgment mark the end of Zondo’s judicial career that spanned 27 years. He will retire later this month.

Maya adds that Zondo will leave behind a legacy that has shaped the judiciary and strengthened South Africa’s democratic institutions.

Maya has hailed outgoing Chief Justice Raymond Zondo for his commitment to champion gender equality in the judiciary.

“Under his leadership, Chief Justice Zondo actively promoted gender transformation in the judiciary. During his brief tenure as the Chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission, he supported the appointment of more women to the bench and the elevation of women judges to leadership positions within the institution and those women including me. He did not stop there and also promoted mentorship and training programmes aimed at advancing and empowering female judges and lawyers. He is one of the first Judges President to make a real effort to bring women into the judiciary by inviting them to act as judges and get permanent appointments in the courts they headed.”
