Six suspects who were wanted in connection with a number of murders and extortion have been killed in a shootout with police at a flat on the Durban South Beach late last night.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson  Robert Netshiunda says the suspects allegedly shot five men execution-style in the Mariannhill area in the west of the metro on Sunday night.

They were also linked to a triple killing in Mpumalanga township, west of Durban, on Friday afternoon, as well as the robbery of a shop in the building they were found in.

Netshiunda says, “Police followed information that the suspects were in hiding in Newlands East. Upon arrival, further intelligence was collected that the suspects were at a rented holiday apartment on South Beach Avenue in the Point area of Durban.”

“When police announced their presence at the apartment, the suspects opened fire and a shootout ensued. All six suspects were shot and fatally wounded during the shootout. No police officer sustained any injuries. It is also suspected that the suspects were involved in the illicit drug trade,” adds Netshiunda.

He says the police are still looking for the person who booked the accommodation for the suspects.
