In a statement, police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says police gathered intelligence about illegal activities at the scrapyard.

The operation also involved Public Order Policing and members of the Hawks. Police say that officials from eThekwini Municipality have confirmed that the bulk of the stolen copper recovered belongs to the municipality.
A 59-year-old man, who identified himself as the manager of the scrapyard, has been detained.
