Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Gary van Niekerk, has conceded that crime in the metro is rampant and they will work with the minister of police to address the crisis.

Early this year, the Mexican Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice published its annual ranking report of the 50 most violent cities in the world.

The report ranked Nelson Mandela Bay (Gqeberha) as the most dangerous city in South Africa, leaping past Cape Town and Durban.

Meanwhile, announcing the quarterly crime statistics last Friday, National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola said that Mthatha and Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape have been identified as problem areas for extortion-related rackets.

Van Niekerk says plans are in place to tackle the problem.

“I must admit as executive mayor of this metro is that crime is out of control hence the minister of police since the cabinet was appointed he’s been here twice already. He’s the only minister whose been and we’ve had a virtual meeting on Monday last week and he will be coming back for the third time to sign a memorandum with the city. We will come together as national, provincial and local. We are going to throw all our resources into one pot and start fighting crime.”
