Cape Town City and Royal AM played a 1-all draw in the first match of the 2024/2025 Betway Premiership season at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg.

City took the lead in the first half with Namibian international Prins Tjiueza scoring for them only for Motebang Sera to level the score for Royal AM late in the second half.

Meanwhile, following a lengthy delay due to a change in the title sponsor, the 2024/25 Betway season commenced this weekend.

The spotlight will once again fall on the big three, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

Amakhosi will be looking for their first silverware in almost a decade and their former player, Marks Maponyane, is hoping they challenge for the league title this season.

“They have to be looking for any cup. The league has always been my pride because that’s bread and butter. You can win once-off trophy but if you win the league, you know you have won a marathon,” he said.

Another football legend, Eugene Zwane, predicts that Chiefs and Pirates will seriously challenge Sundowns for the league title.

Pirates will be looking for their first league title since the 2011/2012 season.

“I am hoping that this season Kaizer Chiefs will stabilise and that the youngsters will get a chance and that they will pick up experience and begin to assert themselves. But if it doesn’t happen, it will still be a challenge for Chiefs,” he said.
