AmaZulu King Misuzulu KaZwelithini says the high level of crime in the country, KwaZulu-Natal in particular, is cause for concern.

The Zulu nation celebrated King Misuzulu’s 50th birthday yesterday.

The second-oldest surviving son of King Goodwill Zwelithini KaBhekuzulu, and great wife, Queen Shiyiwe Mantfombi Dlamini Zulu, was born on the 23rd of September 1974 at Hlabisa hospital in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

King Misuzulu says the gift that the nation could give him is to work together with authorities to curb the scourge of crime in KwaZulu-Natal.

Misuzulu says the escalating rate of crime is worrisome.

“The level of crime in KwaZulu-Natal is heartbreaking. All I want is peace in the province. I would really appreciate that as a gift. It’s not gonna be nice if our country is known for being a dangerous place.”

Cultural expert Professor Gugu Mazibuko says the nation is anticipating positive changes from the reigning King of the Zulu nation.

Mazibuko elaborates more on the importance of having a King: “The good thing is that King Misuzulu KaZwelithini ascended the throne as a constitutional monarch, unlike his father who ascended the throne when there was no legislation at that time. therefore there is quite a lot of change that we are anticipating that the King will make in his reign.”

“Unfortunately his time is flooded with so many social ills and challenges in the nation. Poverty, high level of trafficking and other social ills but we are looking forward to his reign as a change-maker and also someone who will take the nation upward,” adds Mazibuko.

Another cultural expert Khaya Ndwandwe says the King has led the Zulu nation with strength, following the guidance of his late father, King Zwelithini KaBhekuzulu.

He, however, says it would be unfair and difficult to compare King MisuZulu to his late father.

“The only thing that we are looking for is our cultural event, he is still conducting very well besides Umkhosi Wokweshwama. I think the elders have a reason why they put him in that position … we see that he keeps on following the roots of his forefathers and his father Umkhosi Womhlanga even if you can go Kwakhangela [royal palace] you can find amanye AmaKhosi. So according to me, everything is going smoothly,” adds Ndwandwe.

King Misuzulu KaZwelithini was formally acknowledged as monarch by President Cyril Ramaphosa, who gave him a certificate of recognition in October 2022.
