Probe under way after fire at Midrand residential complex claims life

An investigation is under way into the devastating fire that claimed the life of one person at a residential complex, Broadwalk Urban Village in Midrand, north of Johannesburg.

Several other people were injured and transported to a nearby hospital.

The complex, which comprises around 130 apartments, and about 60 units was severely affected by the fire.

Johannesburg Emergency Service spokesperson Xolile Khumalo confirmed that a probe has been initiated.

“Investigations as to what led to the incident are under way. The residents of the complex will now be provided with the opportunity to go back to the complex to search for their remaining personal belongings. EMS continues to urge the residents of Johannesburg to ensure that electrical appliances are switched off after use.”
