South African Communist Party (SACP) General Secretary Solly Mapaila says the assertion by ANC Deputy President Paul Mashatile that he (Mapaila) is the only one unhappy with the Government of National Unity (GNU) is both divisive and isolating.

Mapaila describes Mashatile’s views as a tactic to divide the organisation and isolate him.

He said the SACP’s leadership as a collective and is steadfast in their criticism of the GNU, insisting that their only concern is that of the poor and the working class.

“Unfortunately it’s a tool that was utilised by the apartheid regime in order to divide the liberation forces. I presented the Political Report in the last Central Committee meeting about our position in this regard. So, it’s not a Solly Mapaila thing. They may want to do it, that is okay. This of course is a major disappointment that even our comrades in our movement can opt to use vilification methods and isolation methods instead of saying the Communist Party is raising these questions, can we sit down and have a discussion with them.”

“It doesn’t matter what leaders are saying because sometimes leaders want to justify things because they want legitimacy in office. We are concerned about the conditions of the poor in our country, that’s what frustrates us as the Communist Party,” he added.
