Four women remain missing and two people have died in the flooding that has hit Kariega in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

At least 70 people have also been rescued in 55 separate rescue operations.

The spokesperson for the NSRI, Craig Lambinon, says a joint effort remains in place as the extent of the flooding unfolds.

“In one incident at around 03:00, a security officer reported a vehicle with six people trapped in the flooded Brak River, Rocklands. One male was recovered safely from an island that had formed in the river; an adult female was swept away and is missing; and the remaining four of these six people were recovered safely on the southern side of the river. Multiple rescue operations have recovered people safely from buildings, residences, and vehicles. At East London, NSRI East London, in cooperation with the TNPA Port of East London Port Control, is assisting on the Buffalo River, at jetties sunken or washed away and boats and vessels breaking moorings.”

A number of roads in Kariega remain closed due to flooding in the town.

These include main arterials like Daniel Pienaar Road and Graaff Reinet Road.

Commissioner Andrew Moses from the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Police has warned people to restrict their movement and avoid flooded areas.

“If there is water crossing the road, do not take a chance; rather, take a detour. If you are stuck in your home, please call 041 585 1555, which is the emergency number, so we can get help for you.”

A total of more than 220 millimetres of rain was measured for Kariega yesterday, leading to extensive flooding.
