Parties to enter into coalition talks after failing to get majority

There are some provinces that will also have to discuss coalitions over the next fortnight following the general elections.

The final results were announced last night in Midrand.

The African National Congress (ANC) has a majority in the North West, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Free State, and Eastern Cape.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) keeps control of the Western Cape.

In KwaZulu-Natal, uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK) won 37 seats, so they would need 5 more seats from a coalition deal to be in control.

In the Northern Cape, the ANC won 15 seats, and the legislature would be hung as the other parties together also total 15.

Gauteng will have some difficulties forming coalitions, because the ANC has 28 seats to the DA’s 22.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has 11, with MK on 8.

The total number of seats in the legislature is 80.
