The African Development Bank says Africa only contributes three percent of global emissions, but suffers the most from climate change effects.

It says more money is being spent on the continent to alleviate the impact of climate change.

South Africa will host the Presidential Climate Resilience Symposium today and President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the keynote address.

The theme is “Moving the needle on climate change and just transition”.  The gathering will bring together senior government officials, academia, representatives of the private sector and climate experts.

The African Development Bank’s Akinwumi Adesina said at the COP28 in Dubai last year that they had made more money available for climate change matters.

“Today we lose seven to 15 billion dollars a year and if nothing is done very quickly that’s going to rise to 50 billion a year by 2040. We are not simply folding our hands, as the African Development Bank we commit to 40 percent per year for climate finance. In fact, that is the target we set three years ago. We have exceeded by 44 percent.”
