African National Congress (ANC) KZN provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo has been ordered to apologise to the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) after he accused the Union of being the cause behind poor service delivery in various government departments including Home Affairs and the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).

Mtolo’s comments resulted in Nehawu suing him and the ANC for R2 million for defamation.

ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula says Mtolo’s remarks are unfortunate.

“The meeting appreciated that Comrade Mtolo’s remarks were unfortunate and the platform chosen to air such views fueled the tensions rather than a constructive political engagement between members of the alliance.”

He also went on to say: “We therefore resolved that Comrade Bheki Mtolo, the provincial secretary of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal, will issue an unconditional apology to Nehawu and retract the unfortunate remarks he made.”
