ANC North West alliance partners accuse party of disregarding policy

The African National Congress (ANC) alliance partners in North West have accused the party in the province of disregarding their policy on the deployment of public representatives at local and provincial governments.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and the South African Communist Party’s (SACP) reaction comes after the governing party in the province recalled some of its deployees.

Mayors of Kagisano Molopo, Greater Taung, and Naledi local municipalities were recently axed after the ANC concluded its performance assessments.

According to the alliance, they should have been part of the meeting that decided on the removal of Mayors, in line with the policy that was adopted by the ANC National Executive Committee in 2021.

Cosatu’s Provincial Secretary, Kopano Konopi says, “They didn’t come to us when they had finalised that, and presented findings of that report, and to say that ‘these are the findings that we have made’. That is why I say that we are caught by surprise.”

SACP’s Provincial Secretary, Madoda Sambatha says, “We have reservations on Matlosana; we have serious reservations on Taung; The only problem is that in Taung, the original problem was not only the mayor but was troika. Everyone in the province knows that. We have a serious reservation on the situation of Naledi where the mayor is redeployed. The redeployment of the mayor of Naledi has nothing to do with performance.”

ANC North West Spokesperson, Tumelo Maruping has refuted claims made by their alliance.

Maruping says, “When we removed some of the mayors and chief whips it was based on the assessment that was done and we have not finalised the redeployment as to where they will be going. By the time we do that we will follow the guidelines that were adopted in 2021. Those are guidelines includes the participation of the alliance. So where we are we don’t understand what it is that the alliance partners are talking about.”
