The African National Congress (ANC) in the North West says it is working towards the party’s decision of female representation at the highest levels in the provincial government. It’s been two months since the announcement of the Provincial Executive Council (PEC).

The ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) earlier resolved that all provincial governments should have more women than men as MECs, especially in provinces where the premier is male.

However, North West Premier Lazarus Mokgosi appointed five male MECs and five women to his executive. This resulted in the ANC Women’s League raising the matter with the NEC, which then instructed the provincial structures to rectify the matter.

Provincial ANC spokesperson, Tumelo Maruping says they will implement the decision.

“We can confirm that we need to implement that decision and we will be implementing it very soon. But we have requested the African National Congress that we’re given just an opportunity to finalise stabilising government because we can’t just willy nilly do it. We just established EXCO just one and half months ago. So, we will definitely implement that decision.”

Premier Mokgosi says it’s only a matter of time before the changes are made.

“We are all deployed by the African National Congress including myself. We are in an ongoing discussion on ensuring that we comply to that provision or a policy of the ANC. And therefore it will be done. We will make an announcement very soon.”
