The African National Congress (ANC) in eThekwini has rubbished allegations by the Democratic Alliance (DA) – insinuating the municipality would fund rallies for the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and ANC in the coming week.
Both parties are set to hold manifesto rallies in preparation for the 2024 general elections.
In response, ANC eThekwini Spokesperson Mlondi Mkhize dismisses the claims, “The manifesto rally of the ANC in eThekwini is not an eThekwini manifesto rally, it’s not a rally that is organised by the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The rally is organised by the head office; we are merely there to host the rally. So, if the insinuation, or the understanding, or the assumption is that the manifesto rally – Mayihlome rally of the African National Congress will be funded by eThekwini region – it’s a misplaced one. It’s a national event, and the national will take care of that rally at the level of resources.”
The ANC is demanding that the DA provide evidence to support their assertions.
Vote of no confidence
Amid these developments, eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda survived a vote of no confidence initiated by the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and DA.
The IFP accused Kaunda, an ANC member, of mismanaging the municipality’s finances. The EFF, which is in a cooperative relationship with the ANC in the province – even forming part of the mayoral committee, also voted against Kaunda.
IFP Chief Whip Mdu Nkosi voices his concerns, “eThekwini has over R2 billion irregular expenditure, as from 2019, that is the time when Mayor Kaunda joined council. That is on those lines that we said as IFP that during his term of office from 2019 things are not well in eThekwini. Things are falling apart, therefore we can’t just sit. The EFF voted against the ANC, in fact, they were supporting our motion. The ANC was helped by the smaller parties. The smaller parties, some of them I don’t think that their leaders know what they’re doing.”
