A Cape fur seal found at the Hartenbos River mouth near Mossel Bay in the Western Cape has tested positive for rabies.

Authorities were alerted last week by a member of the public who noticed the seal lying on the beach and appearing ill. The seal died before local veterinarians could euthanize it.

This follows a similar incident in July when a seal at the Poort swimming area of the Point in Mossel Bay was euthanized after displaying aggressive behaviour.

Authorities have advised the public not to approach any seals on the beach, whether alive or dead, and to alert the relevant authorities instead.
