SANDF confirms death of another soldier in DRC deployment

The South African Defence Force (SANDF) has confirmed an incident that has claimed the life of another soldier deployed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The deceased soldier was serving under the United Nations Mission,  MONUSCO, in the DRC.

The SANDF in a statement has confirmed that its member was fatally injured when a hand grenade exploded close to the sleeping quarters in their base in Beni, eastern DRC.

The SANDF also says it is not clear how the hand grenade exploded.

However, the UN and the SANDF board of inquiry will convene and investigate the incident.

The name of the deceased has not been released yet.

Defence Minister Angie Motshekga has sent her condolences to the deceased family and to the entire Defence Force.
