Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says his team will be gunning for maximum points in their first two 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Bafana will lock horns with Uganda at the Orlando Stadium on Friday and then travel to face South Sudan on Tuesday.

Bafana Bafana will be looking to start their Afcon qualifying campaign by beating Uganda and South Sudan in the opening two matches in Group K. Congo is the other nation in the group.

Broos wants maximum points from the first two matches with back-to-back fixtures against Congo to come next month.

“After 90 minutes, we need the victory. That’s the most important thing and if we win, we can go for another one next Tuesday in South Sudan, so that we can achieve our goal of six points and start the next two games against Congo next month with maximum points,” says Broos.

Bafana will be expected to qualify for Afcon. They are the highest-ranked team in the group, and also finished third at the Afcon tournament in Ivory Coast early this year.

Broos is not concerned about the absence of the regular captain Ronwen Williams, who is sidelined due to an injury.

In the team’s last World Cup Qualifier against Zimbabwe, Thapelo Morena came off the bench and scored two goals. The Belgian says he has full confidence in the fringe players.

“We have to put full belief and confidence in the goalkeeper who will play the game, and we will not make excuses after the game if he doesn’t succeed and say but Ronwen was not there. We have 23 players,”

Bafana Bafana beat Uganda 3-2 in a friendly match three years ago.

Star midfielder Themba Zwane will captain the team in the absence of Williams.

The soft-spoken Zwane is hoping to lead by an example.

“I know for sure that I don’t like to talk too much but I know that my role is very important in a field to lead by an example and be a good example to the young ones. So, I need to show by example in the field trying to push myself and try to improve in each and every game,” says Zwane.

This evening’s match at the Orlando Stadium kicks off at 6pm and will be broadcast live on SABC 3 and other platforms.
