Members of the Bakgatla Ba Kgafela, a clan of the Batswana tribe, are proudly celebrating their rich heritage.

They have joined their fellow South Africans in celebrating Heritage Day.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile will deliver the keynote address at the national celebrations at the Meqheleng Stadium in Ficksburg in the Free State.

Setswana is one of the largest ethnic groups in Southern Africa.

There are an estimated seven million Batswana in South Africa and Botswana.

Based in the mineral-rich Moruleng near Pilanesburg in the North West, Bakgatla Ba Kgafela clan traditional leader Chief Nyalala Pilane says, “Bakgatla ba Kgafela are the offshoot from the major bakgatla which was once combined with other bakgatla. We’ve got about seven wings now of bakgatla who comes from one family.”

“Originally, we were in the area of Hammanskraal or Makapan, which is today called Makapanstad where there were two offspring or children of Kgosi Matshego.” – Reporting by Thabiso Moss
