The chief justice of Bangladesh’s top court has resigned.

Obaidul Hassan, who was appointed to helm the Supreme Court last year and is seen as a loyalist to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was told to step down by protesters who gathered outside the court in the capital, DhSuSaka.

He says he agreed in principle to resign after the ultimatum from protesters, days after Hasina fled to neighbouring India.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was has since been forced to flee following the student protests.
