Bester requests access to laptop as his lawyer’s was stolen

The High Court in Pretoria is hearing an application by convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester, who is requesting access to a laptop in prison.
Bester believes this will help him prepare for his upcoming deportation case.
Bester is currently facing charges of escaping from the Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein in May 2022.
He fled to Tanzania with his girlfriend Dr. Nandipha Magudumana.
They were arrested and deported to South Africa.
Bester told the court that his application was filed late because his attorney’s laptop was stolen before they could file.
He says, “My assisting attorney to do correspondence, her laptop and cellphone was stolen at the prison. She was not able to file. There’s a case number in everything. Correctional Services is fully aware of this fact. I’m saying that this should not be the case. I should not be struggling to access this court. I should not have to come to this court to ask for a basic right because it is a guarantee through the constitution that we are all equal. I do not feel equal at this stage.”
The matter has been adjourned until 2 PM.
