The lawyers’ organisation, Black Forum South Africa, says it is investigating several suspected racially-motivated murders of farmworkers across the country. This follows the recent arrest of a Limpopo farmer, Zacharia Oliver, and his two employees.

They are accused of shooting and killing two women and disposing of their bodies in a pigsty at Sebayeng outside Polokwane, Limpopo.

The accused are applying for bail in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court.

Black Forum South Africa chairperson Kgakgudi Morota says the law needs to be tightened to deal with murders on farms.

“This kind of cases are prevalent especially at the farms. As we speak now, we are here in Mankweng but in Middleburg, there are two guys who were beaten to death by two white farm owners. We talk about the Xoka brothers who were also shot and killed in Piet Retief. We talk about the Hlatswayo brothers who were shot and killed in their genitals so the killing of farm workers, and the killing of farming communities is prevalent in this country.”
