Cabinet hails arrest of suspect behind business kidnappings

Cabinet has welcomed the arrest of the suspected leader behind a kidnapping syndicate targeting business people for ransom in the country.

This was announced by Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni at the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) briefing in Pretoria, which provided an update on the Cabinet meeting held yesterday.

Police arrested the 40-year-old suspect at OR Tambo International Airport on Sunday morning, shortly after he arrived in the country.

Ntshavheni praised this development in ongoing efforts by the government to tackle crime. He’s also suspected to be a key figure in the R300 million crystal meth drug ceased recently at the Johannesburg suburbs of Fourways and Bruma.

The arrest underscores the government’s commitment to decisively deal with organized crime.

Cabinet also supports the deployment of the multidisciplinary law enforcement teams to deal with the high crime rate situation that is prevailing in the Eastern Cape.

The multidisciplinary teams include anti-organized crime specialized operations and intelligence operatives, Cabinet reiterated to law enforcement that communities cannot be held ransom by criminals.
