The Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements in the City of Cape Town Carl Pophaim has pleaded with communities against illegal land invasions as the city cannot provide services in those areas.

Pophaim says this is because the areas are not suitable for human habitation.

He says most of the flooded communities in the inclement weather battering the province, are informal settlements.

“Where we find communities where these disasters affect the most is in communities that are flood prone, that are low lying and high flood plains and so whether it’s me or anyone else governing the city, we will never be able to deliver the services that are needed in those communities because of the terrain. And particularly for me as an MMC, is to call on those who encourage land invasion illegally to stop, you are threatening people’s lives, people’s livelihoods, and people deserve dignity where they reside. “
