Western Cape road users have been urged to proceed cautiously as the stormy conditions cause havoc.  City of Cape Town traffic spokesperson Maxine Bezuidenhout says there is flooding on 35th and Owen Streets in Bishop Lavis and a tree is obstructing the roadway in Bordeaux Road, Constantia.

Bezuidenhout has urged the public to report any incidents.

“We urge road users to proceed with extreme caution and to report any incidents or obstructions that they witness, to the city’s public Emergency Communication centre on 021 480 7700 – also remember that where traffic lights are impacted by the weather, to treat those intersections as a four-way stop.”

Assistance

Humanitarian aid organisation Gift of the Givers says it’s been inundated with calls for assistance from other municipalities outside the Cape Metro since the early hours of this morning. This is as gale-force wind, rain and icy conditions prevail.

Spokesperson Ali Sablay says the NGO will be extending its emergency aid to informal settlements in the Drakenstein, Cederberg and Theewaterskloof municipalities who have reached out for assistance.

Sablay says they have been providing hot meals, blankets, and baby care packs to over 20 000  since the week-end. He says they will be pulling resources from other provinces to assist in the Western Cape.
