The City of Cape Town’s Energy Directorate says its new, smart and prepaid electricity meters will help to avoid inaccurate readings.

The city says it will continue to roll out the electricity meters in various areas of the metro in the next few months.

Residents have welcomed the initiative.

The City’s Member of the Mayoral Committee for Energy, Xanthea Limberg says the new electricity meters also offer residents greater management of energy usage.

Limberg says, “When a meter is due for replacement we will send out a letter to your home to arrange an appointment. The meter replacement programme is highly beneficial to residents, there are no costs of electricity between the old credit meter and the new prepaid meters. It also enables qualifying beneficiaries to move to a highly subsidised lifeline tariff which includes free basic electricity. We encourage the residents to reach out to us to make the switch.”
