Family members of the 11 pupils who died in a crash in Carletonville on Gauteng’s West Rand say they are still battling to come to terms with the tragic incident.

A joint funeral service for the children is currently being held in Fochville, less than 10 kilometres from the scene of the devastating scholar transport accident.

The learners, as well as their driver, were killed last month after their scholar transport minibus-taxi was hit by a bakkie.

Morapedi Hlahlele, a relative of four of the children who lost their lives in the crash, says he is humbled by the community’s support during this difficult time.

Hlahlele says, “We have lost and we were expecting a lot from these children. We are still in shock and this tragedy caught us off guard and I would like to say to all those who came here to support us, your support gives us strength.”
