A number of churches have volunteered to accommodate residents of the Mahlangu informal settlement in Olievenhoutbosch, Centurion. This follows a fire which destroyed 100 shacks in the area at the weekend.

City of Tshwane councillor Ofentse Madzebatela visited the informal settlement, on Monday, where 300 people have been displaced.

Madzebatela says, “So currently we have three shelters that will be able to place them in as we look for a greater solution to the situation. We will provide blankets as well as other needed relief because kids are affected, school uniforms, food and other things.”

“Our plan is to ensure that at least every financial year there are about 20 informal settlements that we are able to upgrade up to phase two and develop them further after that. Part of phase two is to re-block a shack so that when one shack catches fire does not affect all these other shacks,” he adds.
