Former Gauteng Premier and African National Congress (ANC) member, Mbhazima Shilowa, has urged South Africans not to be fooled by the party’s public statements against former President Jacob Zuma.

The governing party’s senior members have strongly criticised Zuma since his announcement that he will not campaign for the ANC in the lead-up to the general elections.

Shilowa is one of the founders of Congress of the People (COPE), a breakaway party that was formed in protest of the 2007 election of Zuma as ANC President.

He says recent public attacks on Zuma have nothing to do with the country but everything to do with the party’s political interests.

Shilowa says, “There are many individuals, both from inside and outside of the ANC and in the country, that were insulted by people like Mbalula, Gwede, Zwelinzima because they were all about supporting Jacob Zuma.”

“So when today they say this fellow is bad, we must not only take it with a pinch of salt, we must say to them ‘no, you think we are stupid’. They feel betrayed because like I say in that article, not only is he removing the bread from their mouths, he’s decided he’s also going to take the trough, so they won’t even have the feeding trough to feed from going forward.”
