City Power has kicked off the rollout of new smart meters in the City of Johannesburg.

Pre-paid customers’ meters will be replaced and reset at no cost, as the old technology meters will stop dispensing electricity from next year November.

City Power appeals to residents for cooperation and to allow their officials to gain access to their properties during the implementation of this task.

City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, elaborates: “With these gadgets, City Power will be able to do load limiting every time Eskom demands some megawatts or when consumption reaches critical levels. As a result, this programme will basically ensure that unmetered customers especially those in non-affluent areas have smart meters which will enable City Power to basically monitor consumption as we battle the load shedding currently.”
