The Congress of South African Students (COSAS) says the school curriculum needs to be changed to ensure that township and rural learners get quality education.

COSAS says the quality of education should not be determined by where learners go to school. This comes as many learners continue to struggle to access better education closer to where they live.

Many are flocking to suburban schools to seek placement and quality education.

COSAS spokesperson Douglas Ngobeni says, “Because whether urban or rural we use a universal curriculum, the only time we can respond to the quality of education in South Africa is if we have a career-orientated curriculum which speaks to our daily challenges as the young people. Because every now and then we just change the name of the curriculum, not the content. From CAPS now we going to SHOES. Nothing would’ve changed in the content curriculum.”
