The Congress of South African Students (Cosas) is protesting outside the Pietersburg English Medium Primary School in Polokwane, where Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube is conducting a site visit.

Gwarube is on a tour of several schools in Limpopo today.

Cosas is calling for her dismissal after she chose not to attend last week Friday’s signing of the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The congress’s National Coordinator Skhalo Mahladisa says President Ramaphosa must take action against Gwarube.

Mahladisa says, “Our extraordinary response to the President is that the President should fire this woman immediately because this person does not stand for the poor.”

“This is the first step as a demonstration from here, we are going to march to the Union Buildings to tell the President of South Africa that we are tired, of course we’re in GNU and we believe all of us that it must work for the benefit of our people, blacks in particular because they are in majority in South Africa. Now if an individual is given a critical position such as being the political head of the basic education sector, that person seems to be anti-progressive, that is a problem to us.”
