The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) is calling for a national day of protest on October 7 across all provinces against joblessness, income inequality and poverty.

Cosatu says this will be in the form of marches and pickets in all major cities and towns.

Yesterday, the Democratic Alliance (DA) held a national day of action against Eskom’s proposed 36% electricity tariff increase saying it would put pressure on already struggling consumers.

Cosatu spokesperson Zanele Sabela says the day is significant for workers.

Sabela says, “We’re hoping that everyone will down tools, it’s actually World Day of Decent Work, so that’s why it’s not arbitrary, it’s because it’s a significant day for workers.”
