Cuba has been described as a true internationalist for its unwavering solidarity with many oppressed nations across the world. These were the sentiments of speakers at the 7th Africa-Cuba Solidarity Conference in White River, Mpumalanga.

The African National Congress (ANC) and its alliance partners are hosting the conference, under the theme “Africa’s commitment to the Cuban revolution.” Delegates attending the conference are from various African nations, Cuba, Russia and China.

Cementing their solidarity, Cuba has a decades-long friendship with Africa and the continent is committed to the Cuban revolution and liberation and the struggle against imperialism.

“Cuban struggling…economic blockade solidarity with other country. True internationalist,” says Nomvula Mokonyane, ANC First Deputy Secretary-General.

“I hope this event will inspire the young Cuban doctors will take the lead and end the blockaded and withdraw from Guantanamo Bay,” says Father Michael Lapsley, Friend of Cuba Society Chairperson.

Cuba remains hopeful of greater global participation and is grateful for the support and bond it has with Africa.

“It’s necessary to make our bond more resilient. Cuban people are ready to resist the imperialism and win,” says Fernando Gonzalez Llort, President of Cuban Institute for Friendship Among People.

ANC Deputy President Paul Mashatile thanked Cuba for its continuous support of Africa, especially in the education sector.

“Young people are giving education and some are still training, they are doctors etc. We are grateful for Cuba for that and we want to increase because you offer the best training,”

Calls for peace in the Middle East and Western Sahara were echoed. The conference ends on Wednesday.
