The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Nketoana Local Municipality, Free State, is calling for a comprehensive probe into mayor Mamiki Mokoena’s alleged excessive expenditure on vehicle rental and fuel costs.

The party says the current decision to rent a car for the mayor has already burdened the municipality, with a staggering R100 000 spent in a single month.

DA councillor Diphapang Mofokeng says the party demands a full report on the circumstances surrounding the previous mayoral car involved in a crash.

“This car only travelled 494 km but the amount of money spent on that is staggering. There are two possibilities. That the municipality’s petrol card was filling more than just the mayoral car or it was filling the mayoral car and later (the petrol was) drained and refilled again. For what reason we do not know.”

Mokoena’s office is yet to comment on the latest revelation.
