Dagga worth R3 million confiscated in KwaZulu-Natal

Two people have been arrested after police intercepted a truck transporting more than 1.5 tonnes of dagga with an estimated street value of R3 million in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says an operation was set up after police received information that the dagga would be transported from uPhongolo to Vryheid.

“The truck was spotted along the R69 in the Louwsburg policing area and it was stopped. Upon searching the truck, police found 33 bales of dry dagga which weighed 1567,5kg. The estimated street value of the recovered dagga is R3 million. Two suspects aged 43 and 46 were placed under arrest for dealing in dagga. They are expected to appear before the Louwsburg Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, cocaine with an estimated street value of R400-million was seized in June along the N1 highway in Centurion, Gauteng. According to police spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, a 39-year-old man stored the drugs in a boat, towed by his vehicle.

She says police intercepted the vehicle, confiscated the drugs and arrested the suspect.

“Following an intelligence-driven operation, by the members of Hawks, crime intelligence head office, where information was followed and the vehicle was taken off the road on the N1 between Botha Avenue and the R21 off-ramp. It was an 18-foot boat that was being hauled by a Toyota bakkie that the suspect was driving. The drugs suspected to be cocaine with an estimated street value of R400-million.”
