Deputy President Paul Mashatile has welcomed progress made in Jagersfontein where a mudslide destroyed more than 150 houses when the mine dam wall collapsed in September 2022.

Over 90 families have opted to have the mine rebuild and renovate their homes, while others are taking the legal route to have the mine reimburse them.

Acting Spokesperson to the Deputy President, Keith Khoza says Mashatile visited the area last year as the champion of service delivery who carries the responsibility of oversight on this kind of project.

Khoza says the handover made a major step in the restoration of normal living by those affected.

“He visited the area in May and met all the stakeholders representing the local and provincial governments, community structures and the business community. A clear commitment was made to accelerate the rebuilding and rehabilitation of damaged houses.”

So far 106 houses were handed over to the affected families by the Jagersfontein Developments Mine on Wednesday.
