The African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa says despite the huge loss in electoral support in KwaZulu-Natal, the party will rebuild itself. Ramaphosa is leading a visit by the ANC’s National Working Committee (NWC) to the province.

The two-day engagement is aimed at assessing the state of the province, post the election. The ANC lost its majority in the general election.

It obtained just over 17 % of the vote.

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal faced an uphill battle ahead of the election. Challenges ranged from service delivery, dysfunctional municipalities and a decline in support.

ANC President leads NWC meeting in KZN:

The formation of former President Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party was a huge factor in the drop-in support.

Ramaphosa says after a proper analysis, they will formulate a strategy on the way forward. He says the party needs to strengthen its structures to enable it to improve its capacity in government.

“This weekend we are focusing on our branches, when we have a strong ANC, we can then improve the capacity of government and get government to serve the interest of the people of South Africa.  And we now have a great opportunity to do so working together with others in the Government of National Unity, there is a great deal of enthusiasm even at that level and what we are now doing, we are raising the whole level of activism at branch level.”
