A multi-million-rand construction project in KwaXimba in Durban is set to benefit about 3 000 residents, following a partnership between developers and traditional leaders.

The Inkosi Simingaye Mlaba Shopping centre is expected to be opened in September next year.

Developer Stuart Graham of Stonegold Properties however says he has some concerns around possible disruptions from the construction mafia.

“I think it’s important that we have structures in place with regards to how the jobs will be distributed and services. We engage communities early. We believe that working together with the locals, Inkosi as well as Izinduna. We will get advice from our law firms on how best we can set the structures in place, once all the structures are in place we believe that there will be no disruption.”

Thirty-three-year-old Nontobeko Khanyile is an unemployed KwaXimba resident who says she is hopeful the project will bring much needed jobs.

“I think by opening this site for the start of the mall the youth of KwaXimba will benefit by getting employment, we also have adults who are unemployed, they are staying at home, they will also benefit in this project. So, the number of unemployed people will decrease.”
