The Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture has dispatched teams to assess the damage brought by veld fires that scorched large parts of land in the eastern half of the province.

Sheep farmers in the Qumbu area suffered huge losses with at least 180 sheep killed in a fire that swept through the area.

The farmers in the area are calling for help, they especially need feed for their animals as all the grazing is lost.

The fires were driven by strong winds that accompanied the cold front moving across the country.

A fire also razed more than 10 households at Marhombe Village near Nqanqarhu, leaving two people injured.
