Eastern Cape kidnap victims found alive

The Hawks in the Eastern Cape have confirmed that Alize Van Der Merwe, who was reported missing, has been rescued.

The 39-year-old was kidnapped in Mthatha on Friday while travelling from East London to a resort in Port St John’s.

She was rescued along with a 34-year-old woman who was also kidnapped on the 17th of September between Elliott and Barkley East.

Provincial Hawks spokesperson Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana says they were released due to the pressure that was exerted by law enforcement agencies in finding them.

Wanted extortionists killed

Meanwhile, two alleged extortionists have been gunned down at Gaduka village outside Mthatha, Eastern Cape.
They were the most wanted extortionists in the area.

The National Intervention Unit (NIU) followed a lead and when they were cornered a shootout ensued between them and the police.

A month ago, three other extortionists including Mthatha West Community leader Sakhumzi Mareke were killed.
