For the first time since 1994, the people in Eersterust in Tshwane, Gauteng have swung their vote to a different political party.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has been receiving the majority votes since 1994 in the area but the Patriotic Alliance (PA) has made serious inroads, taking the bulk of the votes.

The PA’s Veronica Marian explains:

“It’s a welcome change and it’s a good change and finally our people realised that we can not go on like this. 90% of them have voted PA. Finally the people have decided enough is enough and for 35-years we’ve been held by the DA and now we can see and we hope to see that the change will be eminent as soon as the counting is over and the work begins. Because actually from the first day after the voting the work starts now for 2026. I want to emphasise on the youth today, make your voice count because you are the future leaders of our country.”

Eersterust locals say their hope is for better opportunities, especially for the youth.

“Well, you can see how untidy this place is. People don’t clean the place. The municipality is there but we don’t see them cleaning.”

“Well, if you don’t deliver, you don’t get support and that’s what happening and people realise about what’s going on. And they lie to people about service delivery and job creation and you can see around here there’s many kids who don’t work and what do they turn to? Drugs, stealing, house breaking and that’s common here in this area.”
