Electoral Court to hear application by MK Party founder

The Electoral Court will today hear the urgent application of the founder of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party against the Electoral Commission.

Jabulani Khumalo was expelled from the party earlier this year.

He is asking the court to set aside the commission’s decision to remove him as the leader of the MK Party and instead recall the former president, Jacob Zuma.

The court challenge takes place after the commission announced the official results of the 2024 National and Provincial Elections.

The MK party’s over 14% of the vote, translates to 58 seats in the National Assembly.

In papers before the court, Khumalo says the Commission acted outside the scope of the Electoral Commission Act when it recorded Zuma as the president of the new political organisation.

Khumalo further alleges that Zuma’s daughter, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla forged his signature on a document to the IEC to create the impression that he was stepping down and Zuma would be his replacement.

The decision of the court is expected to have an effect on the leadership of the party.
