Emergency services still at scene of fatal scholar transport crash

Public Safety in the West Rand District Municipality, in Gauteng, says emergency services are still on scene of an accident where twelve learners and a driver lost their lives this morning.

The accident occurred in the Kokosi-Wedela area in Merafong – West of Johannesburg.

Seven other learners were rushed to a medical facility for treatment.

The scholar transport minibus they were travelling in, was hit by a bakkie, causing it to overturn and subsequently catch alight.

Public Safety spokesperson Nico Kahts says the scene will be handed over to the law enforcement for further investigations.

“We responded to a call as the emergency services of West Rand District Municipality. On arrival we found that the bakkie drove into the back of a taxi and it caught fire. We had a number a of deceased people trapped inside the taxi. The fire department, SAPS, GPG, emergency services are still on scene. The scene is still active and as soon the fire services have done their duty on scene, we will hand the scene over to the law enforcement agencies.”
